The compressor is supplied with its electromagnetic clutch and pulley. The clutch engages the compressor when the air conditioning is switched on and lets the pulley freewheel when it is off.
When a compressor fails internally it sends metal debris through the whole circuit. Fitting a new compressor to an unflushed system is the most common reason a replacement fails early.
Replace the receiver drier or accumulator and the expansion valve at the same time, flush the lines and condenser, and charge with the correct oil type and quantity. A compressor run short of oil will not last, and oil quantity is not something to estimate.
