Rear wheel bearings move fast in taxi and delivery fleets, so keep a buffer of the bearing, oil seal and circlip on the shelf. A job held up for one missing circlip still keeps the vehicle off the road.
Replacing the bearing: the sequence
A general workshop sequence. Follow the Bajaj RE service manual for the exact order and the torque values.
- Raise the rear of the vehicle, support it on stands and remove the rear wheel.
- Dismantle the rear axle end as the manual shows: remove the spring clip (24171066) and the nuts (39118215, LCB00012), then take off the spacer (AH131163).
- Remove the internal circlip (KEBB4717) and press out the old AH131624 bearing.
- Clean the bore and the axle. Check the bearing seat, splines, threads and spacer for wear or damage.
- Press the new bearing in square, pushing only on the ring you are fitting, never through the balls.
- Fit a new circlip, new O-rings (15101041, LJA00008) and a new 48 mm oil seal (24171024).
- Reassemble, tighten to the manual's torque, fit a new spring clip and check that the wheel turns freely with no play.
- Repeat on the other rear wheel.
Which kit should you order?
- If the rear hums, grinds or has play: order the bearing kit, 12 pieces per vehicle.
- If the axle is coming apart for any other reason: order the full overhaul kit, 18 pieces, so every seal is new.
- If grease is leaking but the bearing is quiet: renew the oil seal 24171024 and both O-rings, and check the bearing while it is open.
- If you supply workshops or run a fleet: order the bearing kit by vehicle count and add the other fast-moving Bajaj RE parts to the same shipment.
