0307CM0041N: 2.2 kW Starter Motor for the Mahindra Scorpio 2.2 mHawk

0307CM0041N is the genuine Mahindra starter motor for the Scorpio 2.2 mHawk: a 2.2 kW unit supplied complete with solenoid and drive pinion. Before you replace a starter, make sure it really is the starter: a weak battery or a corroded earth gives the same symptoms. This guide shows how to tell, and then how to fit the new one.

Key takeaways

  • 0307CM0041N is a complete 2.2 kW starter: motor, solenoid and drive pinion in one unit.
  • It is listed for the Scorpio 2.2 mHawk. The S10 new model uses a different starter.
  • A single click, slow cranking or a grinding noise as the pinion engages are the usual signs of a failing starter.
  • Test the battery and clean the battery, starter and earth-strap terminals first: they give the same symptoms.
  • Disconnect the battery before removing the starter.

What you get

The starter comes complete: the electric motor, the solenoid mounted on its side, and the drive pinion that meshes with the flywheel. Nothing has to be transferred from the old starter. The 2.2 kW rating is marked on the solenoid.

Click, slow crank or silence?

The same engine failing to start can be the battery, the wiring or the starter. Here is how to sort them:

SymptomCheck firstIf those are fine
A single click, no crankingBattery charge; clean and tighten the battery terminals and the earth strapSolenoid contacts or the starter motor
Slow cranking on a charged batteryCorroded or loose positive and earth connectionsWorn starter motor
Grinding as the pinion engagesFlywheel teeth for damageWorn pinion or starter drive
Nothing at all, no clickBattery, fuse, key switch and the solenoid feed wireSolenoid or starter

A useful rule: a weak battery or a poor earth costs nothing to rule out, and a new starter on a dead battery will do exactly what the old one did.

Fitting the starter

  1. Disconnect the battery. Take off the negative lead first.
  2. Label and remove the solenoid and heavy cable connections at the old starter.
  3. Remove the mounting bolts and take the old starter out.
  4. Compare the new starter with the old one: the mounting flange, pinion and solenoid position should match.
  5. Clean the mounting face on the engine so the new starter seats square and earths well.
  6. Fit the new starter, tighten the bolts to the workshop manual figure, and reconnect the cables.
  7. Reconnect the battery and start the engine. It should crank briskly with no grinding.

How a starter works

A starter motor is a powerful electric motor that turns the engine over until it can run on its own. Its solenoid does two jobs: it pushes the drive pinion out to mesh with the flywheel, and it closes the heavy contacts that feed the motor. That is why a click with no crank usually means the solenoid is pulling in but not enough current is reaching the motor, which is a battery, cable or earth problem as often as a faulty starter.
