What is browser fingerprinting?

Browser fingerprinting is a way of recognising a device without cookies. A website reads many small details about your browser and device and combines them into one pattern, your "fingerprint".

Each detail on its own is common. Together, they can form a pattern that is rare, or even unique, to your device.

What does browser fingerprinting collect?

Typical signals include your screen size, installed fonts, graphics card, battery level and timezone, plus the way your browser draws images (Canvas), renders 3D graphics (WebGL) and processes sound (AudioContext). Digital Fingerprint Viewer checks these and more.

How do you check your browser fingerprint?

Four steps to test your browser fingerprint with Digital Fingerprint Viewer: install from the Chrome Web Store, run the local scan, read the A to F risk grade and uniqueness, learn what each signal means
Checking your browser fingerprint in four steps (original diagram).
  1. Install Digital Fingerprint Viewer from the Chrome Web Store or the Nonu Ventures apps page.
  2. Open the extension. It scans your browser on your computer.
  3. Read your results: the A–F risk grade, your uniqueness estimate and the list of signals you are leaking.
  4. Learn as you go: click the ? icons to see what each signal is and how trackers use it.

Is my browser fingerprint unique?

It may be. The more unusual your mix of settings, fonts and hardware, the easier you are to pick out. Digital Fingerprint Viewer uses information theory (entropy) to estimate how identifiable you are in a crowd, and turns that into an A–F risk grade.

Does Incognito Mode stop browser fingerprinting?

Not on its own. Incognito Mode and clearing cookies do not change most of the device details a fingerprint is built from, such as your screen, fonts and graphics card.

Can you stop or change your browser fingerprint?

Digital Fingerprint Viewer shows your fingerprint; it does not block or change it. If you change your browser or its privacy settings, you can run the scan again and compare your grade and signals before and after.

Is Digital Fingerprint Viewer private?

Yes, according to the extension's listing. All scanning happens on your machine. The developer states that it does not collect, send or store any of your data, and the Chrome Web Store listing says the developer will not collect or use your data.

Who is Digital Fingerprint Viewer for?

The listing names four groups:

  • privacy enthusiasts who want to see how trackable they are,
  • curious internet users who want to understand online tracking,
  • OSINT researchers,
  • web developers who want to see what their browser exposes.
