The hydraulic tensioner uses engine oil pressure behind a spring-loaded plunger to hold the timing chain taut against its guide. As the chain stretches over its life the plunger extends to take up the slack, and a ratchet stops it backing off when oil pressure drops at shutdown.
When the ratchet or the plunger seal wears, the chain goes slack at cold start until oil pressure builds. That is the rattle heard for the first few seconds after a cold start; left long enough the chain can jump a tooth.
The tensioner ships with a retaining pin holding the plunger compressed. It goes on the engine with the pin in place, after the chain and guides are fitted and timed, and the pin is pulled last — the plunger then extends against the guide. Pull the pin early and the tensioner has to be reset before it will fit.
